The Older Adult Americans Act (OAA) was established July 14, 1965 and led to the National Aging Network, a structure of federal, state, and local agencies that plan and provide services to older adults. The OAA funds a wide range of programs, including nutrition services, transportation, caregiver support, elder abuse prevention and more.
The Marquette Senior Center was founded based on OAA Principles on July 12, 1965 and this year marks the Marquette Senior Center’s 60th Anniversary. The Center is responsible for serving 46% of the older adult population in Marquette County, including older adults in the City of Marquette, Marquette Township, Chocolay Township and Powell Township.
In celebration of these two July anniversaries, staff recommends the City Commission adopt the attached resolution declaring July Older Adult American’s Month and inviting the public to attend a dual celebration of the OAA and Marquette Senior Center’s anniversaries. The free intergenerational community event will be held at the Marquette Commons on July 18, 2025, and will provide educational resources, food and entertainment.
The total event budget is to be $2,000, 50% of which will be obtained through funding assistance.
