The City has been supplying water to the Township on a limited basis for over 60 years through various terms of agreement.  Recently, Marquette Township officials approached the City and inquired about becoming part owner of the water assets used to supply water to the township.  To further explore this possibility, the Township utilized a mutually agreed upon consultant, Raftelis, to study the feasibility of a partnership and determine the value of assets for the Water Filtration Plant and distribution infrastructure. The results of the feasibility study appear favorable for both parties and based on that study the Township is offering to purchase 16% ownership of the assets for $2,332,000.    

Next steps would include staff negotiating the terms with the Township and drafting an agreement that outlines fiscal responsibilities of each municipality.  

Direct City staff to negotiate an agreement with Marquette Township for a partial acquisition of the City’s infrastructure used to supply water to the Township, and outline responsibilities of each municipality following such sale, to be considered by the City Commission at a future date.
