The Marquette Public Art Commission (MPAC) is committed to the maintenance and care of the City’s Public Art Collection. In 2023, MPAC hired Midwest Art Conservation Center to conduct and survey the Collection and provide detailed recommendations and treatment proposals for the City’s bronze sculpture of Father Jaques Marquette by Gaetano Trentanove and seascape oil painting by Leon Lundmark.
The treatment proposals advise both artworks to be cleaned and restored as outlined in the Contract. In addition, Conservators will train selected City staff and partners to clean and wax the statue. Upon completion of this contract, the statue will undergo an annual maintenance protocol administered by the Office of Arts and Culture and hot waxed up to eight years by a licensed conservator or when budget allows. The painting, once restored, will be housed in the new Cultural Center and Trailhead for residents and visitors to view.
