Ordinance 719 - Business Licensing - Roll Call Vote

BACKGROUND:

In accordance with City Code, the City Clerk's office issues local business licenses for several types of commercial activity. This includes licenses for jewelry stores, secondhand shops, mobile food vending units, sidewalk cafes and outdoor merchandise areas, among others. The basic application and licensing process is spelled out in Chapter 12 of the Marquette City Code.

The attached ordinance would amend Chapter 12, Article II of the Marquette City Code to do the following:

  • Stipulate that the average City business license be valid for one year, from the date of issuance.
  • Require license renewal applications be filed 30 days prior to the expiration of the existing license.
  • Clarify that failure to obtain a local license required by state statute is punishable by a Municipal Civil Infraction.
  • Refine the appeals process for license suspension and revocation.
  • Make minor clerical amendments.

Also attached is a version of Article II with the recommended changes reflected.
