The City of Marquette is currently working with the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) to obtain a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) in the amount of $8 million for the demolition of a portion of the former Marquette General Hospital, owned by the Northern Michigan University Foundation. The City has received a letter of intent from the MEDC for these funds and is in the process of completing the extensive application.
A component of the CDBG application is an Environmental Assessment that requires a demonstration of compliance in multiple categories. At the October 11, 2022 City Commission meeting, the City Commission designated the City Manager as the Certifying Officer for the Environmental Assessment process. The Environmental Assessment and component reviews are now largely complete with a Finding of No Significant Impact and the forms require signatures from the Certifying Officer to submit along the CDBG application.
