In October of 2005, the City of Marquette entered into a memorandum of understanding with the Michigan Department of Transportation for the purpose of transferring jurisdiction of two segments of road. The City assumed responsibility for US 41 BR (West Washington Street and South Front Street) and MDOT assumed responsibility for South McClellan Avenue from M-554 (Division Street) to the US 41 bypass.
Subsequently, MDOT requested the City enter into a maintenance agreement to maintain the 1.95 miles of South McClellan Avenue from Division Street/M-554 to the US 41 bypass. The agreement is a standard form used statewide by MDOT to deal with contracted services from municipalities. The City accepted and entered into a maintenance contract through 2009. The contract was renewed on five-year terms through 2019. Though the contract was not renewed in 2019, the parties have continued under the terms of the prior agreement since that time.
MDOT has requested that the City execute a contract for the five-year term of 2019 to 2024. The contract reimburses the City for approximately $50,000 worth of road maintenance services annually. The MDOT policy also requires the City to authorize the Mayor and Clerk to sign the document by resolution.
