The Department of Public Works currently utilizes one wing plow during winter operations to maintain city streets. The use of the wing plow on wider city streets has allowed plow drivers to increase plowing productivity considerably. Staff has recommended that one additional wing plow be added to the fleet to further increase plowing efficiency. The purchased patrol wing will come as a complete unit, ready to mount onto an existing plow truck. By purchasing a wing directly from a manufacturer and installing it with motor pool staff, the city will realize approximately $10,000 in outside labor savings.
The City is currently a member of the Sourcewell Purchasing Program which is a national public service agency that provides cooperative purchasing assistance for state and municipal entities and is similar in function to the State of Michigan purchasing program known as MI-DEAL. All current city plow trucks utilize Monroe-designed equipment. To maintain part commonality and ease of maintenance, staff recommends Monroe equipment be purchased and installed on the plow trucks. Staff solicited a quote from Monroe Truck Equipment, utilizing the Sourcewell Purchasing Program, and was provided a price of $16,356.
