The City of Marquette has been committed to the advancement of recycling in our community. Over 30 years ago recycling was introduced to the community using the small green bins. The City has an opportunity to enhance our curbside collection of recyclables through the implementation of recycling carts at either no cost or negligible cost to the City residents through two complimentary grants. If awarded the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE) – Recycling Infrastructure grant and the Recycling Partnership – Residential Curbside Recycling Cart grant the City will be able accomplish that goal.
The timing is right for making this move now that the Marquette County Solid Waste Management Authority (MCSWMA) has made the switch to single stream recycling and their new materials recovery facility is online. The MCSWMA has the capacity and will be more efficient with added participation. We believe that placing the recycling carts in all single family homes along with a robust effort to educate our residents will help increase the quality and quantity of recycling. We also believe the carts will help eliminate the blowing litter associated with the open top bin currently used.
